The UK government has announced new plans to supercharge the country’s cyber sector as part of its Plan for Change. In this special blog, cybersecurity experts from CybaVerse and Closed Door Security, give their views.
Juliette Hudson, CTO, CybaVerse:
“This is a positive move which highlights that the government recognises the importance of cyber in safeguarding the country’s citizens and future.
In the last few months, many UK citizens have been impacted by cyber crime.
In these instances, they didn’t just read about attacks in the headlines; instead they felt them personally through stock shortages in stores, an inability to purchase goods online and having their personal data compromised by threat actors.
In addition to this, some of the UK’s most reputable brands have suffered massive financial losses at the hands of criminals, highlighting just how vulnerable we all are to the threat posed by maliciously-motivated digital adversaries.
While attacks on retailers are a serious concern, what happens when criminals set their sights on the UK’s critical national infrastructure and set out to put peoples’ lives in danger?
Fortunately, most attackers haven’t been motivated by this yet, but the UK government is clearly concerned they could in the future. As a country, we need to prioritise resilience, ensuring that all businesses and infrastructure within the UK are inherently secure.
This can only be achieved if we create a cyber industry where innovation can flourish and organisations are given the opportunity to grow.
For the industry to be successful, it must be diverse, catering to all business sizes, offering a mix of innovative solutions to defend against threats and skilled service providers capable of securing UK organisations.”
William Wright, CEO, Closed Door Security:
“This latest update is further evidence of the government’s commitment to strengthening the UK’s cyber security defences.
Following closely behind the proposal on the UK’s Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, these updates highlight that the government fully understands the importance of cyber security in the digital world and recognises the importance of supporting the industry, not only to boost the economy but to protect UK PLC, citizens and the country’s infrastructure.
Every organisation today is a prime target for threat actors, which means all organisations, from the largest to the smallest, must consider their security.
However, for many of these organisations, they don’t have the inhouse resources or skills to run security effectively, this is why bolstering the country’s cyber defence industry is so essential.
We need to create a cyber security industry which is innovative and accessible to all businesses in the UK. It is also vital we focus on innovation, ensuing the solutions protecting our most critical industries are free from systemic risk.”
