The Christmas Shutdown: Last-minute security tips from DeterTech

DeterTech

DeterTech, a trusted security partner to the police and infrastructure sectors, is advising businesses to take a few straightforward steps as they wind down for the festive period.

While the extremely high price of copper is expected to drive increased criminality over the Christmas and new year period, DeterTech stresses there is still time to act. Even small precautions in the coming days can significantly reduce the risk of theft and disruption.

A particular concern this year is EV charging infrastructure on unoccupied commercial premises. This follows recent recorded offences in Wolverhampton, Pontefract, Bedford, Caxton, and Cambridgeshire. This joins the list of metal, tools and equipment, plant and machinery that are thought to be on organised crime groups’ wish lists.

Recommended activities that can still feasibly be undertaken at this late stage include:

  • Conduct a perimeter fence walk to identify breaches and remove any items that could be used as climbing aids
  • Check CCTV is working and fully covers key assets and likely entry points
  • Bring in temporary monitored CCTV to cover any identified gaps.
  • Double check any on-site lighting and motion sensors are working correctly
  • Off hire equipment that isn’t going to be used
  • Ensure any signage advertising additional security measures is clearly visible and appropriately placed

Richard Crisp, Intelligence Analyst, DeterTech, says:

“These last couple of days are a great time for security teams and facility managers to make small adjustments. It’s not too late and it really could make a huge difference.”

Operators are also reminded to continue reporting all incidents of theft, suspicious vehicles, and hostile reconnaissance to DeterTech and Opal, the national police intelligence unit focused on serious organised acquisitive crime. This can be done by contacting Crime.Intelligence@detertech.com.
