Thermal imaging from Motorola Solutions at Intersec

SoS was shown the specialized medium to long-range camera offerings from Silent Sentinel, a Motorola Solutions company following acquisition last year.

On stand SA C11, Rob Turner (sales manager Europe/South Africa/Oceania) explained how the cameras (they often combine thermal imaging and visible) are used in high-security environments such as international borders, maritime sites and critical national infrastructure such as oil & gas. This last sector is obviously of interest to visitors to Intersec [@messefrankfurt]. Many of these niches come under Homeland Security which is the broad target area.

The thermal cameras can be both cooled and uncooled and they feature leading-edge electro-optical (EO) sensors. Few orders are simply for off-the-shelf supply; Motorola is responsive in customizing a combination of components.

Rob is talking to many airport, military and police clients across the Middle East. He shows me a camera which the company claims can operate on a thermal basis to 5kms. He notes that the range includes a thermal unit which is said to be able to detect a car at 50kms. Mitigating the threat from drones is a topical issue, and Rob mentions that some of the cameras are said to be able to tilt through 150 degrees in a second, this kind of movement speed being vital with drone threats.

Add-ons can include laser dazzlers, acoustic hailers and loudspeakers. Motorola is developing close links with the major manufacturers of perimeter protection so that the two product offerings can complement each other and be used together at high profile sites. There is similar collaboration with radar companies specializing in security.

Rob notes that apart from the obvious focus on oil & gas, another aspect of the Middle East market is the sheer amount of space; clients have huge estates to secure and thermal is often the way to go. Motorola is highly collaborative with other major brands and there is technical cooperation with Pelco (also a Motorola Solutions acquisition in 2020), Avigilon, Genetec and Milestone.
